As the preparations for this year's World Cup in Russia continue to take shape, the Kremlin, a state-owned company, has announced plans to make some of the stadiums famous worldwide locations disappear.
Russian state-owned giant SUEK, the local company responsible for the stadiums, said on June 12 that it would be constructing a replica of White Bridge, the famous landmark that spans the Spaso district of St. Petersburg, in a bid to keep up with what the company says is a booming tourism market.
"This will allow tourists from all over the world to visit this unique landmark," said Oleg Kulikov, a representative from SUEK. "We're planning to launch White Bridge tours to attract new tourists to the city, which is a great honor for the city, of course."
The bridge has been around for centuries, with some parts dating back to the 17th century. But the current incarnation has been a symbol of the city's imperial capital for centuries, with the main span built in 1697. It's only a stone's throw from the main shopping and tourism district of the city, and is also a popular spot to catch a show.
But in 2020, after the World Cup in Russia, SUEK's White Bridge will be gone.
Notably, the official announcement did not mention the reason behind this move; they only said that the new White Bridge would be "complementary" to the existing landmark and it's expected to be completed by the end of 2020. The decision to pull the plug on the original bridge comes as a real blow to St. Petersburg's tourist industry.
Although Russia has been criticized for its relatively poor preparations for the World Cup, SUEK's move is a real shame. The original White Bridge, located in the center of the city, was built by the order of Empress Elizabeth to connect the main part of St. Petersburg to the island of Vasilevsky Island. Later, the entire area was connected to the mainland by another bridge and the St. Petersburg was officially founded.
